Military study also confirms low transmission risk on flights

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomed the announcement of the results of tests by the United States Transport Command (US Transcom), which confirms the low risk of Covid-19 transmission on board an aircraft. US Transcom tests, which were conducted in August, found that “the overall risk of exposure to aerosolized pathogens, such as the coronavirus, is very low” in the types of aircraft normally contracted to transport United States Department of Defense (DOD) personnel and their families, according to US Transcom. More than 300 aerosol releases were performed simulating a passenger infected with Covid-19 over eight days using United Airlines Boeing 767-300 and 777-200 double-aisle aircraft. “Last week, IATA reported that since the beginning of 2020, there have been 44 cases of Covid-19 reported in which the transmission may be associated with an airplane trip, out of 1.2 billion passengers who have traveled since the beginning of 2020. The US Transcom survey provides further evidence that the risk of infection on board an aircraft appears to be very low, and certainly less than many other indoor environments”, said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s general director and CEO. –
