European Union suspends mask recommendation on flights

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have updated health security measures for air travel, withdrawing the recommendation of mandatory use of masks in airports and on board flights. The new recommendations on the use of masks should come into effect from 05/16. However, EASA points out that the rules may vary depending on the airline or destinations where the rules are different. The update of the Joint Aviation Health Safety Protocol takes into account the latest developments in the pandemic, in particular vaccination levels. In addition to the changes regarding masks, the recommendations include a relaxation of stricter measures in air operations, which will help ease the burden on the industry while maintaining appropriate measures. “From next week, face masks will no longer need to be mandatory for air travel in all cases, broadly aligning with changes in national authorities’ requirements across Europe for public transport”, said the EASA Executive Director, Patrick Ky. “For passengers and crew, this is a big step forward in the normalization of air travel”, he added. Patrick stresses that passengers must, however, behave responsibly and respect the choices of others around them. Those coughing and sneezing, for example, should consider using the item to reassure those sitting nearby. For ECDC Director Andrea Ammon, although the risks remain, the vaccines have allowed life to return to normal. Mandatory mask use in all situations is no longer recommended, but it is important to be aware that, along with physical distancing and good hand hygiene, it is one of the best methods to reduce transmission. Departure and destination rules must be respected and applied consistently, and travel operators must take care to inform passengers of any necessary measures in a timely manner”, she stressed. – https://www.panrotas.com.br/mercado/economia-e-politica/2022/05/uniao-europeia-suspende-recomendacao-de-mascara-em-voos_189327.html
