Latam announces alliance for the conservation of 575,000 hectares in a priority area for the world
On December 20, the LATAM Group announced a new alliance with the Cataruben Foundation in the CO2Bio project, an initiative for the conservation and restoration of floodplains and forests in South America, whose importance lies in its extremely high capacity for capturing carbon dioxide, in conservation of biodiversity, and the significant impact it has had on the community. Located in the Colombian Orinoquia, the project plans to capture 11.3 million tons of CO2 by 2030 in an area of 575,000 hectares, equivalent to more than three times the size of cities like Bogota and Sao Paulo. It will also benefit 700 families in the region, in addition to having the support of the Natural Wealth Program of the United States Agency for International Development – USAID. The alliance with CO2Bio is part of LATAM’s sustainability strategy, which has set targets for carbon neutral growth in relation to 2019, to reduce/offset the equivalent of 50% of domestic emissions by 2030 and to be a carbon neutral company by 2050. These goals will be achieved through the deployment of new technologies and more efficient management, advancing the use of sustainable aviation fuels and through offset programs focused on the conservation of strategic ecosystems. “With this new strategic alliance with Cataruben, LATAM reaffirms its commitment to promoting a collaborative compensation model that not only impacts climate change through greater CO2 capture, but also contributes to improving the quality of life of communities and the protection of biodiversity”, said Roberto Alvo, CEO of LATAM Airlines Group. LATAM promotes compensation programs focused on the conservation of strategic ecosystems. For this, it considers several aspects. On the one hand, projects must be collaborative and include strategic ecosystems capable of absorbing large amounts of CO2, in addition to having communities capable of protecting them. In terms of eligibility criteria, it must be a project that focuses on nature-based solutions that have environmental, social, and economic co-benefits, also linked to the community, that has allies that leverage its actions and that the project is scalable, with the potential to generate more and more positive impact. – Latam anuncia aliança para a conservação de 575 mil hectares em área prioritária para o mundo (aeroin.net)
