Airport in Sao Paulo is making sustainable use of wood

An architecture company is betting on the sustainable use of wood as part of the modernization of Ribeirao Preto airport (RAO), in the countryside of Sao Paulo state. The proposal, according to Bacco Arquitetos, aims not only at constructive efficiency, but also for its crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint. The terminal retrofit will double passenger capacity. The renovation takes place in phases, and the first of them was inaugurated in December 2022, with the renovation of the boarding area and bathrooms. Due to the demand for quick completion, materials were used that have an immediate visual impact on the restoration. The following year, the airport’s expansion phase began, with the construction of a 1,600 m² boulevard at the passenger terminal. Based on the maintenance of existing trees in the surrounding area, water mirror, shops, and air conditioning improvements, the space will integrate the external area with the internal space, dedicated to boarding and disembarking, changing the current configuration of the airport facade and traffic traffic of vehicles. “We sought, in a sustainable matter, to expand the airport by taking advantage of this square in front, integrating the square with the airport and creating a boulevard in a structure made of wood, water, vegetation…”, said Marcelo Barbosa, architect and partner at Bacco Arquitetos. – https://aeromagazine.uol.com.br/artigo/aeroporto-em-sao-paulo-esta-fazendo-uso-sustentavel-de-madeira.html
