LATAM Restricts Checked Boxes on Flights Departing from the United States
Starting October 4, 2025, LATAM has been implementing new rules for shipping boxes as checked baggage on flights originating in the United States. According to the company, this measure aims to standardize baggage handling and prevent the transportation of items considered commercial. Only original, sealed, factory-issued boxes with their contents intact are accepted as checked baggage. The following are not permitted:
- Boxes containing items other than the original;
- Multiple boxes joined together with tape, string, cellophane, glue, or staples, making them into a single piece of baggage.
If the baggage is identified as commercial (such as large bags or non-standard boxes), it must be transported via LATAM Cargo. The company also announced that passengers denied boarding at the airport due to this type of baggage may request a refund of baggage EMDs, provided they meet three conditions:
- The EMD was issued before October 31, 2025;
- Boarding was denied at the airport, with a record in the system;
- The reservation contains proof of denied boarding (SSR CMNT: DNB X BAG).
In these cases, refunds can be processed voluntarily, using the waiver with the reason “EMD AGENCY Technical Limitation.” For EMDs issued after October 31, 2025, or without proof of refusal, the processing follows the regulations of the purchased fare. The restrictions are already in effect and reinforce the distinction between personal baggage and items considered commercial. Passengers planning to board with boxes must be aware of the new rules to avoid problems at check-in. – https://passageirodeprimeira.com/latam-restringe-despacho-de-caixas-em-voos-com-origem-nos-estados-unidos/
