Latam and Airbus will finance MIT decarbonization study
Latam and Airbus announced on August 23 plans to fund a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which will help the process of decarbonizing aviation in Latin America. MIT’s joint study program will provide an analysis of scenarios for the deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), in view of the goal established by the sector to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. The North American institute will research the use of new technologies and explore possibilities related to the use of hydrogen, direct air capture, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. The initiative will also evaluate the use of political and fiscal incentives, such as carbon taxes and carbon offsets, among other instruments, to offset aviation emissions. The research result will be published in April 2024, and will present practical recommendations to decarbonize the aerospace sector in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. “Because it is a difficult sector to abate carbon emissions without a comprehensive short-term solution, carbon neutrality by 2050 is not something that the aviation industry can achieve on its own”, comments Juan Jose Toha, director of corporate affairs and sustainability of the Latam Group. – https://aeromagazine.uol.com.br/artigo/latam-e-airbus-vao-financiar-estudo-de-descarbonizacao-do-mit.html
