Technology allows to expand the application of biological pesticides in crops by means of drones

A common problem for farmers is the amount of pests and diseases that attack the plantation, whether on large or small crops. To increase application efficiency, producers have found the drone – also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle (Vant) – a great ally in controlling these enemies. Today, Brazil has more than 78,000 drones registered with their Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC in Portuguese). Of the total, just over 1,400 are used in agricultural activities. Its use in agriculture is not new. It is already used to map properties and monitor pests, but now it is also capable of controlling them with several biological pesticides. Before, it was possible to distribute insects, natural enemies of the targets, through drones, the so-called macrobiologicals. Now, it is also possible to spread fungi and bacteria through the plots in liquid form, which is the application of microbiological agents. One of the main advantages of applying microbiologicals with the help of drones is the time that the producer earns. The account is very simple. For example, a worker with the manual applicator takes up to 5 days to treat 1 hectare. With the tractor, the same area is sprayed within 3 hours. The drone does the same job in the same area in 30 minutes. In addition to saving time, water consumption is also lower. This is because the liquid applied is more concentrated than that of traditional sprayers. Businessman Nei Brasil is the founder of the company that developed this type of drone. The work started in 2005, but it was only in 2017 that it decided to invest in the agricultural market.
