LATAM aims to use 5% sustainable fuel by 2030

With an appeal to accelerate efforts to generate the necessary conditions for more sustainable commercial aviation, Latam Airlines Group’s CEO Roberto Alvo made public the group’s aspiration to incorporate sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in its operation, privileging the production generated in South America. This is a part of the group’s sustainability strategy, which seeks carbon neutral growth, neutralizing 50% of domestic emissions and seeking to use 5% sustainable fuel by 2030, also achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. “South America has the potential to be a world leader in the production of sustainable fuels, and thereby, make a very significant contribution to climate action. For this, it is necessary that public and private actors collaborate and play their role and dare to lead the energy transition that the world demands. With this announcement, the group is giving a clear signal to the market of real interest in buying SAF fuels on the continent”, stated Alvo. The executive highlighted the development potential of the SAF on the continent due to its natural resources and its wealth in renewable energies. However, it is currently an immature market with little supply, which still does not have the right conditions to develop its potential, including specific regulatory regimes, promotion of technology and innovation, support for production and the logistics chain, mechanisms to reduce costs , among other factors. Currently, the high production costs and the immaturity of the market pose great challenges when considering the mass use of this type of fuel. In this sense, the CEO of LATAM called on government authorities, private companies, universities, and the rest of the airlines to collaborate on the issue, to generate incentives that allow expanding the production, use, and massification of SAF in South America as way to find solutions to the climate emergency. – https://www.panrotas.com.br/aviacao/empresas/2022/04/latam-almeja-utilizar-5-de-combustivel-sustentavel-ate-2030_188558.html
