ANAC issues an Operational Security Alert on the start of 5G in Brazil

Brazil’s Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC, in Portuguese) made available on its Operational Safety page the Operational Safety Alert (ASO, also in Portuguese) # 003-0/2022, addressed to the civil aviation community and mainly to aircraft owners, operators, and crew. Published on 07/05, the announcement provides information about the start of operation of the 5G signal in Brazil. Since the beginning of 2021, ANAC has been aware of international studies regarding the risk of 5G signal interference in radio altimeters and its potential effect on aircraft. In May of last year, the civil aviation authority started interactions with the Brazil’s Telecommunications Agency (Anatel, in Portuguese) in the sense of seeking a common understanding about the necessary mitigations for the Brazilian scenario and guaranteeing safe coexistence between Aeronautical Radionavigation and the 5G Personal Mobile Service in Band C. The evaluation, which involved consultations with civil aviation and telecommunications authorities in other countries, reached its first conclusions, establishing limitations on the installation of 5G stations, of a preventive nature, to be applied in regions close to some aerodromes, as specified in Anatel’s Act #9,064 of June 28, 2022. The joint understanding of ANAC and Anatel is that these limitations will be sufficient to mitigate the risks of interference identified for the Brazilian scenario, according to the data available so far. In any case, considering the evolution of studies at the national and international level, the deadline was set until December 31, 2022 for a review of Anatel Act # 9,064/2022. – https://aeroin.net/anac-emite-alerta-de-seguranca-operacional-sobre-inicio-do-5g-no-brasil/
