International Air Transport Association World Sustainability Symposium to take place in Miami in September

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports that the second edition of its World Sustainability Symposium (WSS) will take place in Miami, USA, on September 24 and 25, 2024, with American Airlines as host. The focus of the activities will be on the actions necessary to achieve the airline industry’s commitment to net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, highlighted the importance of the event, saying, “Sustainability is an existential challenge for humanity , as well as for our airline industry. Achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 is a big and complex task. However, by working together with the wider aviation industry and with the support of governments, we will get there. The WSS is a unique opportunity to bring all stakeholders together to learn, align, and take the critical actions necessary to galvanize our resolve and accelerate progress.” Some of the topics to be covered are decarbonization, innovation, technology, regulation, and transparency. Discussions will cover how to build markets for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), carbon removal, and other emerging technologies, as well as the challenges involved in financing such projects, as well as exploring new aircraft technologies and operational innovations with a focus on the practical aspects of rapid implementation of new technologies to advance the industry’s goal of net zero CO2 emissions. Transparency will also be addressed as a key part of the investment challenge in terms of promoting informed, science-based decisions among investors, airlines and other stakeholders. Marie Owens Thomsen, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Economist at IATA, said, “WSS aims to unite decision-makers from the public and private sectors, and all areas of government, with the aim of decarbonizing air transport. Aviation’s energy transition needs support beyond transport ministries, as it touches almost every area of global, regional, and local economies and societies. Radical collaboration is needed to engage technology, politics, and finance, and comes together with a determined purpose to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The mission is urgent as a multitude of new markets need to reach maturity in the short 25 years until 2050. The WSS is the agenda-setting event that can accelerate progress as we tackle this enormous challenge.” – mundial-de-sustentabilidade-da-associacao-internacional-de-transporte-aereo-ocorrera-em-miami-em-setembro/
