IATA announces event to purchase aviation carbon credits
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) – announced during the World Sustainability Symposium, which ended on September 25 in Miami, that airlines will be able to acquire eligible emission units (EEUs) in an event scheduled for the last quarter of this year. The EEUs acquired may be used to fulfill the carbon offsetting obligations of Phase 1 of Corsia, the international aviation carbon reduction and offsetting program. These obligations apply to air traffic for the period 2024 to 2026, and EEUs must be canceled by January 31, 2028. The event occurs amid a shortage of EEUs eligible for Corsia. Currently, Guyana is the sole supplier of these units. IATA estimates that airlines will need between 64 and 162 million EEUs to comply with Phase 1 of Corsia, varying according to the evolution of air traffic. Part of the 7 million EEUs issued by the South American country has already been sold, and the remaining volume will be available at the acquisition event. The acquisition will take place at the Aviation Carbon Exchange (ACE), organized by IATA, with the participation of Guyana, Mercuria, and Xpansiv. The event will be open to all interested airlines. – https://aeromagazine.uol.com.br/artigo/iata-anuncia-evento-de-compra-de-creditos-de-carbono-para-aviacao.html
